Cliff Lee?

So, back when Roy Halladay was on the trading block, the Phillies where dying to get their hands on him. Instead, they signed Cleveland Ace Cliff Lee and made another successful run to the post-season.

It is being reported that Halladay is back on the block and that the Phillies, Blue Jays, and Mariners are all in on a three-way deal that could send Halladay to Philly, Lee to Seattle, and some prospects to Toronto.

If this is true, it bodes well for our M's. Lee has a career Win-Loss record of 90-52 with an ERA of 3.97. This is excellent considering how many years were spent in Cleveland. Get Stoked!

  1. Jesse: For several years, I've been unable to take the Mariners seriously.. their big moves (ie, Griffey) have not suggested to me that they're serious about a real pennant run. I will formally abandon that position when I see Lee at a Mariners' press conference. You don't sign Cliff Lee to fill seats, but to win games

  2. Correct me if I'm wrong but I can't think of another Cy Youngster other than Big Unit who has ever graced the M's roster.

  3. Tom: It is definitely refreshing to see the Mariners interested in not only winning in 2010, versus some years down the road, but it is also nice to see Zduriencik doing this more strategically than Bill Bavasi. If Lee fails, we're only giving up a few prospects and definitely not all the cornerstones of the organization (ie. Dustin Ackley, Matt Tuiasosopo, Brandon Morrow). Phillippe Aumont shows promise, but he has yet to play above Double A, where he posted a 5.09 in 15 games. Plus, He's being used as a closer and hopefully we aren't looking to replace David Aardsma anytime soon. Plus, if we don't keep Lee next year, thats two high round draft picks we get in 2011 to rebuild again anyway!

Dad: I got curious about your Cy theory. I know previously that Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry played 1982 in Seattle, (got his 300th win in front of a dismally attended game), and he won the CY in the Al in 1972 and the NL 1978. After looking through the past winners, Lee, Johnson, and Perry are the only Cy winners to play for the M's.

  5. Jesse: As a useful shorthand, (& a tried & true cliche) baseball is about pitching. With Lee and King Felix, you're halfway there to a stunning rotation. If the other guys can just not stink and the bullpen holds... well, then you have a team. Plus, it didn't bother me to see Lackey bail on the Angels... A final thought -- you should think about the Sounders. Or at least see them; it's an amazing story and about to get even better with Portland and Vancouver getting expansion franchises.. The beautiful game.

  6. Jesse -- HAH!! No sooner do we discuss Silva than they deal him Cubbies. Of course, M's are getting MLB's biggest problem child in return ...

  7. Hey, I was just going to post that.. Not sure why the Cubs would want Silva with that fat-ass ERA..
